Clos Fourtet is a Premier Grand Cru Classes Chateau in Saint-Emilion. The history of Clos Fourtet can date back to Middle Ages when the winery was once designed as a fort to protect the town of Saint Emillion. Today,the estate has kept its stone walls which enclose the Chateau.
At present, the vineyard of Clos Fourtet covers an area of 20 hectares. The soils here consist of limestone and clay which are common at the right bank of Bordeaux. The grape varieties here include 85% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Cabernet Franc.The average plant age is 30 years. The chateau plants 6,000 vines per hectare. As for the enological process,all the grapes are hand-picked. After fermentation, the chateau will use protein to filter and clarify the wines. Then, the wines will be aged in oak barrels for 18 months.80% to 100% new oak barrels are used.
