Vieux Chateau Certan is one of the oldest Bordeaux estate in the appellation Pomerol. The estate’s history dates back all to the mid 18th century and was completed the whole construction closer to 1770. After the French Revolution, the vineyards of Vieux Chateau Certan were split and divided into several estates which still used the name Certan in their title. 100 years ago, Vieux Chateau Certan was taken over by Georges Thienpont. By preseving the family’s art of wine making, the Thienpont is devoted to making excellent wine that thrills all over the world.
The vineyard covers 14 hectares with 60% Merlot, 30% Cabernet Franc and 10% Cabernet. To help each variety to reach optimum ripeness levels, the vines are double guyot and pruned hard in winter and then crop thinned in the middle of summer to ensure the fruit gats good ventilation and that the berries ripen evenly. The grapes are picked by hand and crushed gently, and put into oak vats to ferment naturally over a period of three weeks so as to extract only the very best of the colour, aromas ans tannis. By combining the tradition with today’s technicology, the Chateau carries out vinificaiton in temperature-controlled oak vats at 32℃ for the Merlot and 30℃ for Cabernet Franc to gain a gentle, gradual extraction. The wine color of Vieux Chateau Certan is not deep but tannin is firm and the style is bonny with unique structure. The new wine has distinct toast-leather flavor, and the tannis needs at least 5 years to ripe perfectly.
